Measuring X-ray Images

How to Measure an X-ray Image, Step-by-Step

Step 1: Enlarge the Image: In the "View exam" screen, double-click on the image you wish to measure to enlarge it.

Step 2: Activate the Measuring Function: Click the Ruler  button in the "Analyze" tab to initiate the measuring function.

Step 3: Start Your Measurement: Position your cursor over the area on the image where you want to begin your measurement and click once. This initial point will be marked as "0.0mm".

Step 4: Continue Measuring (Series of Lines): For subsequent points, single-click within the image. Each click will create a new mark and connect it to the previous mark with a green line. The displayed mark will indicate the distance in millimeters from your very first mouse click.

Step 5: Terminate a Series of Lines: To conclude a series of connected lines, double-click on your final desired point.

Step 6: Measure a Straight Line: If you only need to measure a single straight line, click once at the beginning of the desired area and then double-click with the left mouse button at the end of the line.

  1. Save Your Measurement: To save a copy of your measurement, click on the "COPY" button. Copy button is located in the "Adjust" tab.

Note: All third-party sensors must first be calibrated by setting their pixel size in microns. Without this calibration, any measurements you attempt will result in 0.00mm.

CAUTION: We discourage users from measuring on pan images due to known distortion of panoramic images. When measuring an intraoral X-ray, always start by considering how the image was taken and the inherent limitations of 2D radiography.  Be aware that even with the best technique, some degree of distortion is usually present. For highly precise measurements (like for implant placement), 3D imaging techniques like CBCT are preferred due to their superior accuracy in eliminating distortion.
